Moreover, the warm weather, the bright day, the woods, open fields, and the chirping of birds amused Franz a lot. Hence he was tempted to run away from school and spend his day out of doors.

Ans: - When school begins, unusually a great noise could be heard from outside. The sound of opening and closing of desks, lessons repeated in unison, and the teacher`s great ruler rapping on the table could be heard. Franz anticipated this type of commotion in the classroom.

3. Why the lesson was called the last lesson?

Ans: - France was defeated in the war by Prussia. The two districts in France Alsace and Lorraine were occupied by Prussia. French was taught in the schools of that area. Meanwhile, an order had come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. A new German teacher was supposed to come the next day. So, M. Hamel arranged the last class in French and he would leave the school. Hence this lesson is called the last lesson.

Ans: - A notice from Berlin had been put up on the bulletin board at the town hall. The new order had come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine districts in France. C. Essay Type Question

1. What was the order from berlin? How did that order affect the people of Alsace, Particularly M. Hamel and his student?

Ans: - The order that had come from Berlin was to teach only German in the school of Alsace and Lorraine.

                        According to the order, M. Hamel declared that it was his last lesson in French. He would leave that place for good. A new teacher would replace him to teach German. This news aroused patriotic feelings and love for French in students as well as the villagers. The village elders had come to show their respect for M. Hamel who had served the community for forty years. The classroom was calm and quiet. M. Hamel had said that French was the most beautiful, logical, and clearest language in the world. He called upon them to guard it among themselves and never forget it, from children to old people attend, read, and wrote in the classroom. Everyone paid head to his class, on the whole, the entire class had been changed as compared to other days.

2. Describe the unusual thing that Franz notice on the day of the last lesson.

Ans: - On the day of the last lesson little Franz noticed a lot of  unusual things around him when he started school too late he noticed a group of people gathered near the bulletin board. They were intensely reading some news. The atmosphere on the school campus was also different. He did not hear the great noise of students. He also did not hear the sound of opening and closing of the desk and the rapping ruler of M. Hamel. He also observed that M. Hamel put on the green coat the frilled shirt and the silk cap. This was not his usual dress which he used to wear on the inspection and prize day. M. Hamel was generally a person of a very strict nature. But on that day M. Hamel seemed very kind. Franz Become very surprised having seen the village people sitting on the back benches of the classroom. There was silence everywhere. These types of unusual things were noticed by Franz.

3. Give a detailed account of the scene in the classroom on the day of the last lesson.

Ans: -The order from Berlin caused some change in the school that day. The entire school seem strange and solemn, the old villagers were sitting on the back benches of the classroom quietly to thank M. Hamel for this forty years of faithful service and for showing their respect for the country. M. Hamel put on the green coat, the frilled shirt, and the silk cap on that day though it was not an inspection or prize distribution day.

                  Moreover, there could be seen the village people sit on the back benches of the classroom. The order from Berlin also brought a sense of repentance for those who despite having time did not learn French properly.

4. Draw a character sketch of M. Hamel as it is shown in ‘The Last Lesson.

Ans: - M. Hamel was generally a person of a very strict nature. He is presented in the mood of a traditional schoolmaster. M. Hamels is A character with all sympathy and respect. He always kept his terrible iron ruler under his arm, he was a hard taskmaster. The order of berlin transformed him in another way, patriotic feelings were aroused in him. He would teach them in French for the last time. He had an extra soft and gentle tone towards his students. He did not scold Franz for coming late or did not use his ruler when Franz got mixed up and confused. M. Hamel was highly respected both by his students and village people. He had served for forty years in the same school. The village elder came to pay their respect to such a grand teacher. He loves France and the French language from the core of his heart, he considered French the most beautiful language in the world. He asked the French man to guard it and never forget it.
